Find a Ring that Fits

When buying a wedding ring, finding the right fit is important. So, how do you make sure you get the right size?  Read on to get a few tips on how to find a ring that is comfortable to wear and does not slip off.

If you’re on the threshold of a major turning point in your life and are making a commitment that should last a lifetime, whatever kind of ceremony you’re planning to formalize this step will symbolize the intent of a lasting relationship.

A wedding ring symbolizes that commitment, so be sure to find the right fit. This can be ultimately more important than the style and design of the ring, because the ring should stay on the finger and feel comfortable to wear.

Weddings can be as elaborate or as simple as you wish. Similarly, wedding rings can also be as simple or as flashy as you wish. But the fit should be just right.

How to Find the Ring Size

There are many ways to find the ring size. They vary from the inaccurate ‘use a strip of paper or a piece of string to measure your finger size’ to having you finger size measured using sets of gauge rings. So, what should you do?  Here are a few tips.

Using Gauges

You are now buying a wedding ring, not an engagement ring. So, the element of surprise is not important. You can now openly take measurements. Take your bride-to be or groom-to be to the jewelers and have their finger measured for a right fit. Jewelers generally have a set of gauge rings that they try over your finger to find the right fit.

If you want to find the fit yourself, some jewelers can lend you a set of plastic gauge rings to take measurements at home. You can also order a set of gauge rings online.

Using Existing Rings

If your future bride or groom is already wearing a ring that fits perfectly, use that.  Make sure that the ring is worn on the left hand ring finger. Otherwise, it will not be an accurate match. If possible, take that ring along with you to show it to the jeweler, to let him determine the right size. Do not take the measurement yourself, as the ring might have been distorted a little with long use.

What is the Right Fit?

Finding the right size is not as straightforward as it sounds. You cannot just slip a gauge ring over the ring finger and buy the size that slips in easily.

Finger Size

Note, it is the finger size not the ring size. Fingers have a tendency to swell and slim down over the day. One rule is to take a ring size measurement at the end of the day, when the finger size is considered to be at its widest. This will ensure that the ring is comfortable to wear throughout the day

The Knuckle

When being measured for ring size, you generally feel that if the ring slides easily over your knuckles, it is a good fit. But, if the ring slides too easily over your knuckle, it might actually be a loose fit. It might keep constantly turning round and round on your finger and get banged about. It might even slip off your finger.

The knuckles need to be taken into careful consideration.  The ring should fit snugly over your knuckle, but should not be loose.  It should not be too tight as this might cause problems when you have to slip it off and put it on again. Larger knuckles might require a slightly looser fit while slimmer knuckles can accommodate tighter rings.

The knuckle should stop your ring from falling off. So, once the ring is where it should be, give it a slight push. If it stays on and does not slide over the knuckle you have probably found the right size. Just make sure the ring does not squeeze your finger when it stays on.

Just be sure of basic facts about measurements. If the person for whom you are buying the ring cannot come to the jewellery shop, take care to find the right finger size. Then, consult the jeweler to pick the right sized ring.

If You Are Buying Online

When you are buying your ring online, you need to know about ring size charts. The problem is, the standards vary from one country to another, even from one jeweler’s chart to another. Even the ISO standard charts may not always be uniform. Make sure that you know the correct size you need and then make sure that the size on the chart matches your required size before placing your order. Ensure that the jeweler provides the inner diameter measurement for an accurate fit.

A wedding ring is meant to be worn throughout your life. Make sure that it fits comfortably and stays on. That can be a measure of your care and commitment to this most important relationship.
